Links to Meteorology Web Sites at Selected DOE/NNSA Sites
A number of DOE/NNSA sites have publicly accessible Web sites that provide useful meteorological and climatological information. These include:
- The Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) Meteorology Services website provides information on meteorological conditions, forecasts, and climatological data for the Brookhaven Site. The BNL Atmospheric Sciences Division performs research focused mainly on the chemistry, physics, and transport of substances in the atmosphere.
- The Hanford Meteorological Monitoring Program provides meteorological monitoring and weather forecasts for the Hanford Site. The website features links to real-time meteorological data and climatological data (weather forecasts are not provided on the program’s publicly-accessible website). In addition to operating the meteorology monitoring program, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) performs a wide range of basic and applied research in the atmospheric sciences. This work is conducted by PNNL’s Atmospheric Science & Global Change Division.
- The Idaho National Laboratory (INL) Meteorology Program conducts basic and applied atmospheric science research and meteorological support for operations at the Idaho Site. The program website features links to meteorological data, forecasts and warnings, and climatological data for the Idaho Site. This program is operated by the Field Research Division of NOAA’s ARL.
- The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) Weather Pages provide information on meteorological conditions, forecasts, and related tools. The University of California operates this program and the National Atmospheric Release Advisory Center (NARAC). The NARAC is a national support and resource center for emergency response. NARAC conducts planning, provides real-time emergency response assessments, and performs detailed studies for incidents involving the emission of nuclear, radiological, chemical, or biological materials.
- The Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Weather Machine provides access to the latest meteorological observations, climatological information, and weather forecast products for the Los Alamos area. A Meteorological Monitoring report for LANL describes this program in detail. The meteorological monitoring program is operated by the Meteorology and Air Quality Group at LANL.
- The Nevada Test Site (NTS) Meteorology Program conducts basic and applied research related to the atmospheric environment, emergency preparedness, and emergency response at the NTS. The program’s website features links to meteorological data, forecasts and warnings, and climatological data for the NTS. The program is operated by NOAA’s Air Resources Laboratory (ARL)/Special Operations and Research Division (SORD).
Other DOE/NNSA meteorological monitoring programs are operated at the Savannah River Site (SRS), Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), B&W Y-12, B&W Pantex, Sandia National Laboratory (SNL), Argonne National Laboratory (ANL), and Yucca Mountain Project Office (YMPO).
An overview of meteorology-related operations at all of the DOE/NNSA sites is provided in a report prepared for the Office of the Federal Coordinator: Overview of DOE and NNSA Operational Meteorological Programs and Supporting Research
A number of DOE meteorological monitoring programs are planning to provide data into the Meteorological Assimilation Data Ingest System (MADIS). MADIS is being developed and operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
