Outreach to Special Populations: Courses Developed for the National Library of Medicine

The Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) teaches the following courses in accessing and searching the National Library of Medicine's toxicology, environmental health, and medical databases.

Connecting People and Resources; Online HIV/AIDS Information
ORISE provides health professionals affiliated with Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Minority Education Institutions (HBCU’s/MEI’s) and other minority health professional organizations with training in the use of the latest electronic HIV/AIDS online resources available through the Internet. Therefore, the information can be disseminated in affected communities and used in implementing and/or supplementing community-based HIV/AIDS programs.

This one day course includes the review of the following databases:

The Delta Connection; Environmental Hazards in the Lower Mississippi Delta Region
ORISE’s goal is to increase the use of online, interactive databases that address the impact of environmental hazards by Historically Black Colleges and Universities/Minority Educational Institutions (HBCUs/MEIs) and community-based organizations in the Lower Mississippi Delta Region.

This one and a half day, hands-on computer training course is designed to help participants access and use environmental, occupational health, and hazardous waste information resources.

Participants learn the basic concepts for searching the National Library of Medicine’s online interactive Toxicology and Environmental Health Information Program files, including the Environmental Protection Agency's TRI (Toxic Chemical Release Inventory), and have the opportunity to explore other environmental health information resources on the Internet.

A Click Away
This hands-on training course is designed to help participants understand criteria for reliable Web sites, become familiar with National Library of Medicine (NLM) Web sites, use NLM's MedlinePlus to find HIV/AIDS information, and identify other HIV/AIDS resources.

How to Find Reliable HIV/AIDS Information on the Web
Manual: How to Find Reliable HIV/AIDS Treatment Information on the Internet (PDF)
Manual: HIV Prevention Web Sites for Communities of Color (PDF)
(You will need the Adobe Acrobat Reader to view these files. The reader may be downloaded free from the Adobe Web site.)

Participants are shown how to locate the most current treatment information on the Internet, including information on clinical trials, HIV/AIDS drugs, treatment regimens, and treatment-related literature.

Course instructors show participants how to determine the accuracy of medical information found on the Internet and include a review of several reputable treatment Web sites, including the NLM free databases and consumer information on MedlinePlus, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), AIDSinfo, the Body, AIDS Education Global Information Service (AEGIS), HIV InfoWeb, HIVInSite, Project Inform, and other resources.

Toxicology and Environmental Health Information Resources on the Web

The goal of this one and one-half day combined lecture and hands-on computer training course is to develop a constituency of health professionals who understand the relationships of exposure to hazardous substances to health effects.

Additionally, the course will discuss how to gather information to address community concerns related to environmental exposures.

This program is designed for environmental health professionals (physicians, nurses, pharmacists, etc.), college faculty and staff, librarians, and representatives from state and local health agencies.

The databases covered during the course include CCRIS, ChemIDplus, DART/ETIC, GENE-TOX, HSDB, IRIS, TOXLINE, and TRI.

TOXNEX on the Web
ORISE designed this one day, hands-on lecture and computer training course for the NLM to show environmental health professionals how to gather up-to-date information on hazardous substances in the environment and their potential health effects.

This program is designed for environmental health professionals, faculty, librarians, community-based organization representatives, concerned citizens, and other stakeholders.

The databases covered during the course include CCRIS, ChemIDplus, DART/ETIC, GENE-TOX, HSDB, IRIS, TOXLINE, and TRI.
