Introduction/Administrative News The TRADE Industrial Hygiene/Occupational Safety Special Interest Group (IH/OS SIG) Steering Committee met on April 1, 2004 through a conference call meeting. IH/OS SIG Steering Committee Chair Bob Kapolka, Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), facilitated the meeting in which the following Steering Committee members participated:
Ralph Hinterman, Argonne National Laboratory-East (ANL-E), IH/OS SIG Chair-Elect
Michael Hurshman , MACTEC-ERS
Bob Kapolka, ORISE, IH/OS SIG Chair
Deborah McFalls, ORISE, IH/OS SIG Coordinator
Rob Nicholas , Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL)
The following Steering Committee members notified the IH/OS SIG Chair/Coordinator that they could not participate in the meeting:
Bruce Lippy , Michael D. Baker, Inc.
Lowell Howard, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory
LANL’s TA-16 Stepladder Accident Investigation Video Rob Nicholas previously reported that a video had been completed about a 2003 accident that occurred at LANL involving a subcontractor employee cutting a pipe while standing on ladder. LANL demonstrated how the accident occurred by making a video to include in the accident investigation report.
The video was sent to Steering Committee members to review for potential distribution in the future as an IH/OS SIG product. Upon review, committee members asked if some accompanying materials could be developed for the video. Suggestions included:
Provide more details about the work being done when the accident happen
Develop some questions to use as a training tool to generate discussions about what went wrong
Discuss the event with the focus on the application of ISM
Provide information on what has changed at LANL as the result of this accident
Use the video as an aid in accident investigation and/or ladder safety trainings
During this conference call, Rob discussed developing a one-page discussion guide and a 2-3 page summary of the accident to be available to distribute with the video. Committee members agreed to send to Rob suggested questions for the guide. Based on funding levels, the video could either be put on the Web for viewing or distribute to SIG members through the mail in VHS format.
LANL’s “Walk-Around” Safety Process Videos Rob Nicholas previously reported that he was working on four videos that focus on a walk-around safety process which is a means for manager to go on site and watch workers while they are doing their task and engage in related safety discussions. The videos include general instructions about the safety process and examples of three different work environments in which the trainer models and leads the walk-around process. The videos can be used in safety meeting, especially ones that focus on the instructions of the process. LANL is willing to share these videos to a wider audience through the SIG. Limited changes only would be permitted to revising the videos due to budget restraints. The TRADE IH/OS SIG credits would be put on the cover of the VHS tape box only. The four videos would be put on one VHS tape that would be appropriately 70 minutes in length. Rob will provide 12 copies of the video to ORISE to distribute to committee members for review as a potential future SIG product.
2004 IH/OS SIG Steering Committee Workshop The committee continued discussions about a 2004 IH/OS SIG Steering Committee Workshop. Two suggestions received to-date are the following meetings to consider linking the workshop to:
Meet in Washington , DC at the facilities of the Michael D. Baker, Inc., with Committee Member Bruce Lippy as the host. The meeting could occur in conjunction with the Joint EFCOG/DOE Chemical Management 2004 Workshop usually held in late October or early November of each year. Details about the 2004 DOE workshop are not available at this time.
Meet in conjunction with the PCIH 2004 Conference. The 19th Annual Professional Conference on Industrial Hygiene is sponsored by AIHA's Academy of Industrial Hygiene , October 2–5, 2004 in Montréal , Canada . Additional details about the conference can be found at url: (http://www.aiha.org/TheAcademy/html/pcih.htm)
The committee would like to finalize the plans on the meeting location by the June Steering Committee Conference Call Meeting.
Future Steering Committee Meeting The next Steering Committee Conference Call Meeting is scheduled for May 25, 1:15 – 2:45 EST , conference call number is 202/287-1019. The April meeting highlights and the May meeting agenda will be sent to committee members prior to May 25.
