Introduction/Administrative News
The TRADE Industrial Hygiene/Occupational Safety Special Interest Group (IH/OS SIG) Steering Committee met on August 24, 2005 through a conference call meeting. IH/OS SIG Steering Committee Chair Ralph Hinterman, Argonne National Laboratory-East (ANL-E), facilitated the meeting in which the following Steering Committee members/guest participated:

  • Tom Cornell, Fluor Hanford Inc.
  • Bill Frede, Honeywell FM&t
  • Ralph Hinterman, ANL-E
  • Michael Hurshman, S.M. Stoller
  • Deborah McFalls, Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE)
  • Rob Nicholas, LANL
  • John Peters, Brookhaven National Laboratory
  • David Weitzman, DOE, EH 52, Office Of Worker Protection Policy and Programs

The following Steering Committee member/guest notified the IH/OS SIG Chair/Coordinator that they could not participate in the meeting:

  • Bob Kapolka, ORISE
  • Dr. Daniel Marsick, DOE, EH-52, Office Of Worker Protection Policy and Programs

Deborah McFalls reported that ORISE is in discussion with DOE regarding funding to support the IH/OS SIG and the DOE TSL Index for the upcoming fiscal year. Deborah anticipates a positive outcome from these funding discussions.

LANL’s Electrical Lessons Video
As noted in previous Steering Committee Conference Call meetings, the committee is considering for potential distribution as a SIG product and posting on the DOE TSL Index, the Electrical Lessons video training materials developed at LANL by Committee Member Rob Nicholas.  The video examines three recent LANL electrical incidents and their lessons learned. The video was distributed to committee members prior to this conference call meeting for review. During this conference call, the committee approved distribution of the video in DVD format. The committee agreed to use the following closing statement in the video:

“For help with any electrical safety questions, contact a safety professional.”

The DVD will be distributed in the near future as new SIG-sponsored funding permits. The related guidance document sent to committee members to review will also be available on the SIG’s Web site. Committee members were asked to send their review comments on the guidance document directly to Rob Nicholas (robnicholas@lanl.gov) through an E-mail message and to CC Deborah McFalls (deborah.mcfalls@orise.orau.gov) on the message.

LANL’s Nested-The Nested Safety and Security Committee Process Video
The Steering Committee was also asked to review for potential distribution, the LANL Nested-The Nested Safety and Security Committee Process video training materials.  These materials demonstrate the LANL Nested Safety and Security Committee process. Committee Member Rob Nicholas was not sure initially if these materials would have a broader application beyond LANL but has since decided to offer them to the committee for consideration for a SIG product. The materials initially came from the DuPont Corporation through the National Safety Council. LANL adapted the materials for their site’s use. The LANL video training materials were distributed to committee members prior to this conference call meeting for review. During this conference call meeting, the committee decided to delay a decision on distribution of this video because several committee members had not reviewed it. The committee will revisit this request during the September conference call meeting.

IH/OS SIG Steering Committee Workshop
As discussed in past conference call meetings, the committee was planning a Steering Committee workshop for October 2005. Due to SIG-sponsored funding discussions not being finalized and the need potentially for a workshop to be held following the release of the anticipated DOE document, Chronic Beryllium Disease Prevention Programs; Worker Safety and Health (10 CFR 851), the committee has decided to not go forth with the planned October workshop. It is anticipated that the 851 regulation and the related implementation guidance document will be completed at the end of the calendar year followed by a DOE related workshop. The committee would prefer to link their workshop to a DOE 851 related workshop which several committee members anticipate they would participate in.

Future Steering Committee Conference Call Meeting
The next Steering Committee Conference Call Meeting is scheduled for September 29, 2005 , 1:15 – 2:30 EST , conference call number is 301 /903-6023.
