Department of Energy Order 456.1 - The Safe Handling of Unbound Engineered Nanoparticles View
On May 31, 2011, the Department of Energy (DOE) issued Order 456.1 to establish requirements and assign responsibilities for DOE, including the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), activities involving unbound engineered nanoparticles (UNP). This directive ensures that work involving UNP occurs in a safe and secure manner that protects workers, the public, and the environment. Included in the order is the cancellation notice for DOE Notice 456.1, The Safe Handling of Unbound Engineered Nanoparticles, dated 01-15-09.  

National Nanotechnology Initiative view
The National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) is a Federal research and development (R&D) program established to coordinate the multiagency efforts in nanoscale science, engineering, and technology.

National Nanotechnology Coordination Office view
In 2001, the National Nanotechnology Coordination Office was established among the eight agencies participating in the National Nanotechnology Initiative to serve as the point of contact on Federal nanotechnology activities, conduct public outreach, and promote transfer of the results of Federal nanotechnology research and development for commercial use and public benefit.

21st Century Nanotechnology Research and Development Act view
On December 3, 2003, the 21st Century Nanotechnology Research and Development Act was signed into law, which authorizes funding for nanotechnology R&D over 4 years. This legislation puts into law programs and activities supported by the National Nanotechnology Initiative.

Department of Energy Environmental, Safety and Health, Safety & Health Bulletin - Good Practices for Handling Nanomaterials view
