February 8, 2002

The United States Department of Energy in conjunction with Los Alamos National Laboratory is proud to announce the release of its new training video, Beryllium Worker Safety . This 30-minute video was produced and developed for the Department of Energy-Office of Environment, Safety, and Health by the Industrial Hygiene and Safety Group (ESH-5) at Los Alamos.

Beryllium Worker Safety presents essential health and safety information for Department of Energy beryllium workers. It combines technical information with the personal perspectives of current and former beryllium workers, inviting workers to make informed decisions based upon their own lives and values.

The video has been formatted to meet a variety of training needs, and trainers are encouraged to use this video in whatever way best serves their facility.

Beryllium Worker Safety is primarily designed to work with the live-classroom training. It may also be used as part of a general employee or awareness training.

The video is divided into 6 modules:

  • Why we're here-a introduction to safety attitudes
  • Past & present-the history and use of beryllium
  • Taking it in-respiration and pathology of chronic beryllium disease
  • Beryllium Lymphocyte
  • Proliferation Test
  • How much?-the new action level Controls

Each module is designed to be viewed by itself. The sequence of the 6 modules parallels the training outline provided by the beryllium-training facilitators manual, Communicating Health Risks-Working Safely with Beryllium. The manual has been developed through the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education and is available on the Department of Energy beryllium website.VIEW

Beryllium Worker Safety has been sent to a point-of-contact at each of the facilities and organizations within the Department of Energy beryllium community.
