Safety and Health Division PRESS RELEASE July 2000 Contact: Rob Nicholas Tel: (505) 667-3748 The Industrial Hygiene and Safety Group at Los Alamos National laboratory received three Aegis Awards for its video, Air-Purifying Respirators. The widely distributed video provides introductory and refresher training for all Department of Energy (DOE) workers whose job requires the use of air-purifying respirators. The video was honored in three categories: "Training," "Direction," and "Script Writing." The Industrial Hygiene and Safety Group originally produced Air-Purifying Respirators for Los Alamos, then retrofitted the video for use at all DOE facilities before donating it for complex-wide distribution through TRADE. Due to the cost savings benefits to other DOE facilities from this and other videos donated by the Industrial Hygiene and Safety Group, these videos are now regarded as a DOE Success Story. Distribution of Air-Purifying Respirators has now expanded beyond DOE for use by the U.S. Department of Interior, the Bureau of Land Management, and the Environmental Protection Agency. The Aegis Awards are one of the video industry’s premier competitions for peer recognition of outstanding video production and non-network TV commercials. Other recipients include Motorola, IBM, Intel, Silicon Graphics, Lockheed Martin, PBS, and The Discovery Channel. Previously, Air-Purifying Respirators received the Silver Reel Award for "Script Writing" from the International Television Association, and the Silver Screen Award for "Directing" from the U.S. International Film and Video Festival, as well as Certificates for Creative Excellence in "Writing and Concept" and "Training and Education." The video also received the Bronze Telly Award. Many people contributed their talents and expertise to the success of this video. At Los Alamos, these people include: producer, director, and writer Rob Nicholas; director of photography Larry Gibbons; production assistant Reggie Radcliffe; advisors Tom Moore and Helena Whyte; ES&H Communications Team members Ruth Barks, Kemp Beebe, and Rosalie Ott; executive producer Brad Gallimore; and project manager Barbara Hargis. The video also benefited greatly from several other artists, including the talents of 30 Second Street, with editing by Clark Morris and animation by Kelly Lujan. Eric Richardson at C&D Spot Studios and Sid Fendley of Mountain Road Recording Studios provided audio post-production. Jeff Nelson composed and performed the original music and arrangements. Additional animation contributions were provided by the Training and Development Group and the Fernald Environmental Management Project, with additional graphic contributions by Michelle Baker. |
