OAK RIDGE, Tenn.—Dr. Eric W. Abelquist has been named executive vice president of Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) and deputy director of the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE).

In his new position, Abelquist will work in collaboration with ORAU President and CEO Andy Page to formulate organizational strategic objectives, as well as oversee key strategic initiatives and best business practices. He will also serve as the deputy director for work related to the ORISE contract and assume leadership for the corporation in the absence of Page.

Abelquist has worked with ORAU for 17 years, beginning as a project leader and most recently serving as vice president and director of ORAU’s Independent Environmental Assessment and Verification programs—a position which he had held since 2002. As vice president and program director, he was responsible for strengthening the program’s core business competency focused on performing radiological surveys, environmental assessments and independent verification of cleanup projects for the U.S. Department of Energy and U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, among others. He was also responsible for the oversight of ORISE’s on-site radiochemistry laboratory, as well as ORAU’s health physics services and professional training programs.

Abelquist earned both his Bachelor of Science in radiological health physics and his Master of Science in radiological sciences and protection from the University of Lowell (Mass.). He earned a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering from the University of Tennessee in 2008. Abelquist is a certified health physicist, a past president of the East Tennessee Chapter of the Health Physics Society and an extensive author and co-author of many health physics publications.

"Eric brings a wealth of experience from his background in radiological sciences that has enabled him to build positive relationships with government agencies for nearly 20 years," said ORAU President and CEO Andy Page. "With his new responsibilities, Eric will now assume a more active role in strengthening our program- and business-unit leadership, community relations efforts and partnerships with government agencies."

Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) is a university consortium leveraging the scientific strength of 97 major research institutions to advance science and education by partnering with national laboratories, government agencies, and private industry. ORAU manages the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education for the U.S. Department of Energy.
