ORISE Instrumental in Cleanup Verification at Battelle Columbus Site
In support of the Department of Energy's efforts to clean up and restore former weapons research and production sites, ORISE provides the critical independent verification steps that instill public confidence in the cleanup efforts.
DOE recently celebrated the completion of the Battelle Columbus Laboratories Decommissioning Project at the West Jefferson (North) site in Ohio. As part of this project,
ORISE conducted the independent verification surveys at three former process buildings and support facilities plus more than 35 acres of adjacent land.
The ORISE activities confirmed that remedial actions effectively met established release criteria. They also verified that the final radiological conditions of the site were reflected accurately in the final documentation.
Once used for nuclear reactor and spent fuels research, the site was contaminated with cesium-137, uranium, and plutonium isotopes.
ORISE began the project in 2003, working closely with cleanup personnel throughout the process. ORISE received high marks from the cleanup contractor as well as DOE for its work.
