Posner Joins ORISE

OAK RIDGE , Tenn. —Dr. Philip Posner recently joined the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) as a scientific review advisor for the Performance Systems program. Posner brings 32 years of experience as a researcher and educator to ORISE and is an internationally recognized electrophysiologist.

“We are fortunate to have a person of Dr. Posner’s stature on our team,” said Mike Wetzel, director of ORISE’s Performance Systems organization. “His scientific background coupled with his experience in peer and merit review in a variety of settings will add value to our processes across the program and to the reviews that we conduct in the health sciences arena.”

Posner will advise review coordinators and recruiters on the scientific review process and standard procedures. Other responsibilities include identifying potential peer reviewers and acting as moderator for health sciences related panel reviews.

“Scientific review is a key element in the process of funding outstanding research, training, and education, and ORISE is a leader in the field of science review,” Posner said. “I am pleased to have the opportunity to bring the skills that I have gained from my academic background of teaching and research, as well as in reviewing for federal and private agencies to ORISE.”

Most recently, Posner was a professor and scholar in physiology at the Florida State University College of Medicine. From 1999-2002, he served as professor and department head of anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology at Auburn University, and prior to that, he held research and teaching positions as professor (1985-1998), associate professor (1977-1985), and assistant professor (1972-1977) in the physiology department of the University of Florida.

Posner earned a doctorate in physiology from the State University of New York and a bachelor’s degree in biology from Wagner College .

ORISE is a U.S. Department of Energy institute focusing on scientific initiatives to research health risks from occupational hazards, assess environmental cleanup, respond to radiation medical emergencies, support national security and emergency preparedness, and educate the next generation of scientists. ORISE is managed by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU).
