Nourse Named IRIS Project Manager at ORISE

OAK RIDGE, Tenn.—Bobette D. Nourse recently joined Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) as the Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) program manager in Health, Safety, and Emergency (HSE) management programs.

Nourse will be responsible for providing overall management and technical support for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) IRIS projects assigned to ORISE.

“ORISE is committed to increasing the quantity and quality of health assessments conducted by the EPA,” said HSE Director Marcus Weseman. “Dr. Nourse has the scientific and management skills to lead our health assessment group in meeting this goal.”

Prior to joining ORISE, Nourse was an environmental scientist for Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant Field Research Center. She also served as the technical lead for human health risk assessment activities for the Y-12 and K-25 environmental restoration programs. “This is an exciting, challenging, and wonderful opportunity for me and for ORISE,” Nourse said. “Working with the EPA has been a vision of mine for many years.”

Previously, Nourse was a professor of chemistry at Chattanooga State Technical Community College, Pellissippi State Technical Community College and the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. She also taught as a graduate student at Purdue University and as an undergraduate at Michigan State University (MSU). As a postdoctoral student, she served on the research staff at ORNL conducting research and development in the field of mass spectrometry.

Nourse received a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from MSU and a doctorate in analytical/organic chemistry from Purdue University. She is a member of the American Chemical Society and American Society for Mass Spectrometry.

ORISE is a U.S. Department of Energy institute focusing on scientific initiatives to research health risks from occupational hazards, assess environmental cleanup, respond to radiation medical emergencies, support national security and emergency preparedness, and educate the next generation of scientists. ORISE is managed by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU).

ORAU is a university consortium leveraging the scientific strength of 91 major research institutions to advance science and education by partnering with national laboratories, government agencies, and private industry. ORAU manages the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education for the U.S. Department of Energy.
