Exercise Builder
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) plans many exercises to ensure its readiness to respond to a variety of events. To streamline the process of planning an exercise, the emergency management experts at the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) teamed with subject matter experts from the DOE Emergency Management Issues Special Interest Group to devise a computer-based tool called Exercise Builder. DOE has adopted this product as the standard for developing the department's internal-only exercises.
Exercise Builder is easy to use. It makes available generic exercise components such as scenarios, objectives, and evaluation criteria. DOE facilities can add site-specific information and develop exercise packages using the PC-based tool.
End products include scopes, objectives, scenario materials, and evaluator modules. Once exercise packages have been developed, they can be modified for future use.
