Occupational Medicine
The Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) assists the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in the medical assessment component of the DOE Human Reliability Program (HRP). In developing and implementing the HRP, ORISE helped to determine the qualifications and procedures of medical and psychological personnel. Subject matter experts also evaluated psychological assessment instruments used in the HRP and delineated the role of the designated psychologist.
ORISE also provides technical assistance in the areas of workplace violence awareness, employee assistance programs, and general occupational medicine. Subject matter experts provide information and assistance in general occupational medicine policy development and analysis including:
- Evaluating substance abuse inventories and their utility in occupational medicine
- Promoting awareness of violence in the workplace
- Comparing clinical laboratory tests for detecting alcohol abuse
- Studying the efficacy of self-administered substance abuse tests
- Surveying DOE contractors to produce an overview of employee assistance programs’ services and utility
