Project Description:

A fellowship opportunity is available in the Laboratory Reference & Research Branch, Division of STD Prevention (DSTDP) in the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The Laboratory Reference and Research Branch performs research on the pathogenesis, genetics, and immunology of syphilis and other treponematoses, gonococcal and chlamydial infections, chancroid, genital herpes, donovanosis, bacterial vaginosis and trichomoniasis; and conducts clinical, field, and laboratory research to develop, evaluate, and improve laboratory methods used in the diagnosis and epidemiology of these sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Opportunities may include:

• Acquiring and organizing materials and information to carry out study procedures for assigned projects
• Assisting in the processing and analysis of samples received from projects related to quality control testing and performance validation of laboratory developed tests (LDTs)
• Performing various nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) for the molecular diagnosis of STI pathogens associated with genital ulcer disease (GUD) and genital discharge
• Performing molecular typing of Treponema pallidum strains from research projects related to congenital syphilis
• Maintaining accurate and complete records of all reference and research work conducted
• Preparing written reports on scientific investigations and projects, and preparing presentations for dissemination of research findings

The Research Participation Program for CDC is administered by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE). The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend depending on educational level and experience. The participant must show proof of health insurance. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid.

Qualifications:

• A bachelor’s or master’s degree in microbiology, biology, or similar relevant educational background is required. Applicants must have received this degree within the last five years, or must expect to complete all requirements for such a degree prior to starting the fellowship.
• Knowledge of routine microbiology laboratory procedures, real-time PCR, serology, and ELISA testing is preferred.
