Project Description:

A project is available within the Development and Reproductive Toxicology and Immunotoxicology Branch, located in the Division of Toxicology (DT) in the Office of Applied Research and Safety Assessment (OARSA) in the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) of the United States Food and Drug Administration. The Development and Reproductive Toxicology and Immunotoxicology Branch establishes and conducts cohesive mission-relevant research in toxicology and molecular biology that will ensure the safety of theU.S.food and cosmetic supply.

The participant will join the Dermal Absorption and Metabolism Team in evaluating the extent of cosmetic ingredient skin penetration using mainly in vitro skin diffusion cells set up with fresh and frozen skin. The participant will have the opportunity to learn many different techniques related to dermal absorption studies and biochemical pathway identification of toxicant injury. Activities may include the following:

  • Accurate record keeping of experimental findings and
  • Assisting in the preparation of manuscripts or written summaries of experimental finding.

The appointment is for up to one year and is subject to availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Participants do not become employees of FDA or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in physiology, biochemistry, cell biology, toxicology or an equivalent field with some knowledge in the areas of animal studies and/or cell cultures for evaluating the toxicity of drugs or food-related chemicals. Degrees must have been earned within five years of the desired starting date, or completion of all requirements for the degree should be expected prior to the starting date.
