Faculty Needed Immediately

Research Participation Program
Food and Drug Administration
Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition
Laurel, Maryland

Project Description:  A project is available in the Virulence Mechanisms Branch (VMB), Division of Virulence Assessment (DVA), Office of Applied Research and Safety Assessment (OARSA), in the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN).   The participant will study the biological and molecular characterization of curli expressed by Cronobacter spp. for the development of a Bio-plex detection assay for curli-expressing and for data acquisition for the Microbial Rosetta Stone Database. The participant will be trained in the evaluation of microbiological data relevant to the project. The participant will gain an understanding of how such data, when coupled with a review of the scientific literature, can be used to design experiments that will be used in the development of Bio-plex reagents and assays for characterization and detection in general microbial foodborne pathogens, specifically Cronobacter spp. The participant will gain experience evaluating information on food products that may be contaminated with Cronobacter spp. already approved by the agency. The participant will learn how these evaluations provide guidance in determining whether administrative actions are necessary. See project FDA-CFSAN 2009-0001.

Faculty and/or Postgraduate Research Participation Program
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
National Center for Environmental Assessment
Arlington, Virginia

Project Description: A research project training opportunity for faculty and/or postgraduates is currently available at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) National Center for Environmental Assessment – Washington Division (NCEA-W) in Arlington, Virginia. The participant will have the opportunity to participate with EPA scientists working in teams on cross-cutting scientific issues, particularly mode of action of environmental agents in health risk assessments. The principal focus will be on evaluating and interpreting mutagenicity and genotoxicity data related to environmental exposures.  Applicants must be either public or private university faculty members or have received a postdoctoral degree within five years of the desired starting date. See Project EPA-NCEA 2008-07.

Faculty Research Opportunity
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
National Risk Management Research Laboratory
Cincinnati, Ohio

Project Description: A faculty research project is available at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) National Risk Management Research Laboratory (NRMRL). The appointment will be served in the Sustainable Technology Division (STD) in Cincinnati, Ohio. The project involves the development and modification of software to realistically simulate the permeation of the solvent and solutes of a fermentation broth through zeolite-silicone rubber mixed matrix membranes under pervaporation. Applicants should be a faculty member of a college or university, have a strong background in the polymer sciences and membrane technologies, and formal experience running High Performance Computer simulations of liquids passing through membrane barriers. See project NRMRL/STD-2008-01.
