    As we continue to celebrate January as National Mentoring Month, please join us for a unique peek into the mentor-mentee dynamic between distinguished mentors and their ORISE participants. During this virtual event, you will have the opportunity to hear firsthand from pairs of mentors and participants from various agencies about their journeys, challenges, successes, and the impact of their collaborations. Beth White, Ph.D., will also host a mini-workshop on goal setting that you don't want to miss.

  • Using artificial intelligence to improve radiation dose prediction accuracy

    The November 2024 special issue of “Applied Sciences” recently published an artificial intelligence (AI) study co-authored by ORISE Cytogenetic Biodosimetry Laboratory Director Dr. Adayabalam Balajee. The article, titled “Neural Network Ensemble to Detect Dicentric Chromosomes in Metaphase Images,” examines how AI-based tools can advance the field of radiation biodosimetry by improving the accuracy of absorbed dose estimation and by facilitating the development of predictive modeling for radiation induced short- and long-term health effects in humans.

They also share tips and tricks and some of their favorite tools.

Join us for an exciting opportunity to explore the fascinating connection between art and STEM! ORISE wants you to choose an existing piece of art or create your own masterpiece and create a brief, original visual presentation that creatively connects back to a STEM concept that helped to plan it or create it. The deadline to enter is January 31, 2025.

January School Technology Social Media Contest

Teachers! Throughout the month of January, we want to know what technology you currently have available in your classroom and what technology you want to have! The winner will receive a teacher technology bundle valued at $500 that includes an Alexa Echo, smart bulb, personal laminator, Cricut joy, and more! The deadline to enter is January 31, 2025.

Operation Breakout Lesson Plan Competition

Teachers, January is National Puzzle Month! ORISE wants to see how you incorporate puzzles (scavenger hunts, breakouts, etc.) and games into your lesson plans to help build these skills. Teachers of any grade level or subject are invited to submit a STEM lesson plan that includes puzzle or game. THREE teachers who submit lesson plans will be selected to receive mini grants up to $1,500 to help buy equipment for their classroom! The deadline to enter is January 31, 2025.
