Taylor Brantley participated in the MSIPP summer internship program for two consecutive summers during her junior and senior years of college. She graduated from the University of South Carolina-Aiken in 2019 with a bachelor’s degree majoring in Industrial Process Engineering.

In 2018, Taylor interned with the Environmental Modeling Group running kinetic simulations to analyze molecular activity at the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL). Taylor returned to SRNL during the summer 2019, supporting the MSIPP program to develop program metrics and generating reports. In January 2020, she began her career at Savannah River Remediation (SRR) as an associate engineer in the Procurement Engineering organization. Taylor states, “Interning at SRNL and being a part of MSIPP assisted my career tremendously. The tasks I was given during both of the internships, although very different, offered me the opportunity to gain knowledge in a variety of valuable areas, broadening my perspective of the types of things I enjoy doing. I was also able to network and make connections during the poster sessions, meet and greets, and just around the office; which aided in me obtaining my current position. I was able to start my career at a great company because of the opportunities provided by the MSIPP internship program and I am very thankful for my experiences at SRNL and being a part of MSIPP”.

Meet Hasan Tharwani, a MSIPP Intern Hired at Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL)

Hasan Tharwani is an Electrical Engineering graduate from the University of Texas at San Antonio. Hasan was hired as an Associate Engineer at the Savannah River National Laboratory.

Hasan states, “I had the opportunity to internship with SRNL through the MSIPP in the summer of 2017. My project consisted of developing a user interface software and an algorithm to collect binary data from radiation detectors and output the coincidence counts. Although this was not my expertise, the project turned out to be fun and challenging. The internship allowed me to learn about SRS, all the different areas, and the type of work that is done at the site. This all helped in an easy transition to my professional career at SRNL due to the solid foundation that was built during my internship.”

Meet Agnerys: a MSIPP Intern speaks about her experience at SRNL

Agnerys found the MSIPP program to be extremely helpful in her academic and now professional career. She was able to gain so much knowledge and experience from her internships, and now she is able to use that experience in her new career at SRNL.

Agnerys says, “The MSIPP program was a big part of my professional formation. The experience and the hands-on work that I have done here were crucial for my graduate research project development; giving me the skills to adapt into difficult situations.” She made great connections with her mentors, and even reached out to them after the internships were over. Also, she found the workshops and networking events held during the internships to be helpful with career path choices.

“As a first college graduate in my family, I think that these opportunities help minorities, like me, to achieve those academic and professional goals. It helps to change your state of mind and shape the course of professional paths,” says Agnerys.
