Oak Ridge, Tenn.—Sarah Harkness has been named director of the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education Belcamp, Md., office.
In her role, Harkness will manage internship and research experience programs and staff of 15 to 30 individuals serving scientific, academic, military and business customers, including the Department of Defense and the Department of Energy.
“We’re excited for Sarah to take on this role as she possesses extensive management and administrative experience within the higher education sector,” said ORISE Director Jim Vosburg. “Her addition to the ORISE team will further strengthen the management of our research participation programs by helping to ensure continuity between the Belcamp office and our Oak Ridge, Tenn., headquarters.”
Prior to joining ORISE, Harkness served as director of academic services at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine beginning in February 2018, and before that was director of summer and winter sessions at East Tennessee State University from 2007 to 2018.
“During her 18 years of experience, Sarah has worked closely with students of all academic levels; collaborated with faculty and staff across multiple academic disciplines; and participated in a variety of outreach and recruiting efforts,” said Craig Layman, ORISE associate director of workforce development. “She will undoubtedly provide great value to DOE, DoD, and our other sponsors who want to ensure a sustained pipeline for the STEM workforce.”
Harkness holds a Doctorate in Education from Nova Southeastern University, a Master of Science degree in management and administration of education programs from Nova Southeastern University, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in government and public policy from Eastern Connecticut State University.
