Teachers from the Appalachian Regional Commission/Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ARC/ORNL) Summer STEM Program spent time in a virtual format at REAC/TS’ Cytogenetic Biodosimetry Lab (CBL) from June 21 to July 2, 2021. During this time, they learned about various methods of biodosimetry, radiation emergency medicine, and the response capabilities provided by REAC/TS. Their backgrounds include teaching biology, chemistry, physics, and anatomy and physiology. As their research project, the teacher group compared dicentric formation between low dose and high dose rate exposure to ionizing radiation by analyzing digital images. This year’s participants included Devlin Marcum from Oneida High School, Tennessee; Dennis Godward from Lord Botetourt High School, Virginia; and Meredith Spano from Hudson Global Scholars, South Carolina.
The CBL’s director, Dr. Adayabalam Balajee, also was a guest speaker for one of the ARC Summer STEM program classes for high school students on June 24, sharing his knowledge of radiation biology and biodosimetry with these future STEM professionals.
