ORISE offers free summer mini academies for students in June and July Topics include robotics, artificial intelligence, coding and more

The Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education will offer six free mini-academies for students of various ages in June and July. ORISE mini academies are designed to enrich STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education and help students learn in a fun, engaging and unique way.

All of the mini academies are free to attend, but space is limited and registration is required. Please register at the links included in the mini-academy descriptions.

Advanced Robotics Academy. June 5-9, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Pollard Technology Conference Center, 210 Badger Ave. in Oak Ridge. This week-long day camp is designed for rising ninth- through 12th-grade students who already have a basic knowledge of building and programming a robot. The week will be filled with exciting and challenging Working in small teams, students will move beyond robotics basics and explore autonomous operation and machine learning. Students will develop skills and mindsets to help them to grow into engineers, computer programmers, and technology leaders of the future. Participants should have prior experience with robotics. This mini-academy is not designed for beginners. A Zintellect account is required and should be created in the student’s name even if the parent’s address is used.

Artificial Intelligence Mini-Academy. June 12-13, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at ORAU Classroom, 100 ORAU Way in Oak Ridge. Designed for rising seventh- through ninth-graders, this two-day program will introduce middle school students to AI and its uses and applications. Students will engage in exciting and challenging activities over the two-day period to develop skills and knowledge to help them grow into technology leaders of the future. This is an introductory program and no prior experience or knowledge is needed. Creation of a Zintellect account is required and should be created in the student’s name even if the parent’s address is used.

Math Exploration Day (Rising First- through Third-Graders). ORAU Classroom, 100 ORAU Way in Oak Ridge. June 15, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Math Exploration Day is a fun and education-filled day of challenges to let your elementary student practice their math skills and collaborate with peers. Registration is on a first-come-first-served basis. We will have an alternate list to contact if spaces become available.

June 16, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Math Exploration Day is a fun and education-filled day of challenges to let your elementary student practice their math skills and collaborate with peers. Boe-Bots Academy. June 19-23, 830 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. ORAU Classroom, 100 ORAU Way in Oak Ridge. Designed for rising seventh- through ninth-graders, Boe-Bots Academy is filled with exciting and challenging activities. Working in small teams, students will design, build and program a robot. This is an introductory program and no prior experience of knowledge is neccessary.

Scratch Programming Mini-Academy. June 21, 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. ORAU Classroom, 100 ORAU Way in Oak Ridge. Designed for rising sixth- through eighth-graders, the Scratch Programming Mini-Academy is a chance for your middle school student to get an introduction to coding and see just how easy it can be. Registration is on a first-come,first-served basis. If this course becomes full, we will have an alternate list to contact if spaces become available.

Kindercoding Class. July 6, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. ORAU Classroom, 100 ORAU Way in Oak Ridge. KinderCoding Class is a day-long introduction to the basics of coding for rising first- through third-graders. Let them see that coding can be easy and fun while they learn and practice new skills with their peers. Registration is on a first-come,first-served basis. If this course becomes full, we will have an alternate list to contact if spaces become available.
