Participants will receive a stipend as support for their living and other expenses during this appointment. Stipend rates are determined by USDA ARS officials, and are based on the participant’s education and experience.
Every participant is require to have health insurance on the first day of the appointment and throughout the duration of the program. Participants may not be present at ARS facilities if their insurance coverage lapses.
A stipend supplement may be provided to offset the cost of the individual or family health insurance plan offered by Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), which includes medical coverage and a prescription drug plan. This supplement may be applied to the insurance plan of the participant’s choice. If the participant is not enrolled in the insurance plan offered through ORISE, we must receive documentation of the premium paid before issuing the first supplement.
Vision and dental insurance plans are not available through ORISE. ARS health insurance stipend supplements may not be applied to the cost of such plans obtained elsewhere.
Relocation expenses incurred in relocating from the participant’s current address to the assigned research facility (if more than 50 miles from the address shown on the application form), may be reimbursed. Relocation expenses may include transportation, shipment of household goods within the United States, temporary lodging, and per diem. Reimbursements are governed by federal travel regulations and the ORISE Travel Policy.
Participants may be offered a travel allowance to cover travel-related expenses to scientific and professional development activities. Travel may include domestic and foreign travel to professional development experiences, scientific/technical research conferences and professional meetings and other activities.
