General Program Questions

What is the NLR–SLAC Pathway Summer School?

The NLR–SLAC Pathway Summer School (PSS) is a six-week summer learning program where high school students and recent high school graduates explore scientific research, energy technologies, and STEM careers. Participants engage in hands-on learning activities, interact with scientists and mentors, and learn about pathways to future education and careers in science and engineering.

Where does the program take place?

Program activities take place at:

  • National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) – Golden, Colorado
  • SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory – Menlo Park, California

Eligible students may also visit nearby national laboratories during the program.

Is the program in person or virtual?

The Pathway Summer School is an in-person program. Students should plan to attend all scheduled program activities.

Eligibility

Who can apply?

Students who meet the following criteria are eligible to apply:

  • U.S. citizens
  • At least 16 years old by June 22, 2026
  • Current high school students or recent high school graduates from the Denver and San Francisco Bay areas
  • Available to participate in the full program schedule

Students who are curious about science, technology, and energy research are encouraged to apply.

Do I need prior research experience to apply?

No. Prior research experience is not required. The program is designed to introduce students to scientific research and STEM careers.

Are students under 18 allowed to participate?

Yes. Students under 18 may participate if they meet the eligibility requirements. However, participants must be 18 years or older by the program start date in order to travel between program locations.

What materials are required for the application?

Applicants will need to submit:

  • An online application form
  • Two letters of recommendation from a teacher, school administrator, or community organization leader

Program Experience

What will students do during the program?

Participants will engage in guided learning activities and collaborative projects related to energy science and electrochemistry. Students will also:

  • Learn about scientific research methods
  • Explore STEM career pathways
  • Participate in workshops and enrichment activities
  • Interact with scientists and mentors
  • Present what they learned at the end of the program
How much time will the program require each day?

Students should expect to participate approximately six hours per day (about 30 hours per week) during the program.

Will students receive mentorship?

Yes. Scientists and mentors from NLR and SLAC will interact with participants throughout the program, sharing their experiences and helping students explore scientific ideas and career pathways.

Program Support and Benefits

Is there a cost to participate?

No. The Pathway Summer School is free for selected participants.

Do students receive a stipend?

Yes. Participants will receive a $500 weekly stipend during the program.

Is housing provided?

Housing will be provided for eligible non-local participants.

Students aged 18 or older may be housed at:

  • Colorado School of Mines during the Colorado portion of the program
  • Stanford University during the California portion of the program
Is travel support available?

Travel support will be provided for eligible students who participate in programming at both locations.
