Professional Internship Program (PIP)

The Professional Internship Program is designed to introduce undergraduate and graduate students to the challenges of conducting energy research. It is an opportunity to network with world-class scientists using state-of-the-art equipment and to expand students’ knowledge in their field of study while exposing them to new areas of basic and applied research. Participants interact daily with assigned mentors who guide research activities during the internship. These research activities help transition classroom theory into hands-on experience, helping provide answers to today’s pressing scientific questions.

LENGTH OF APPOINTMENT

Undergraduate students: Two weeks to one year initial appointments renewable up to four years

Graduate students: Two weeks to one year initial appointments renewable up to five years

Post-BS: Two weeks to one year initial appointments renewable up to two years

ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible, you must:

• Be an undergraduate or graduate student in good standing at a regionally accredited college/university, or a post-baccalaureate within two years of graduation
• Have an overall minimum GPA of 2.5/4.0
• Be at least 18 years of age at the time of appointment

BENEFITS

• Stipend – All internship programs provide a weekly stipend based upon academic classification and experience.
• Insurance – Insurance is a requirement for the Professional Internship Program.
• Inbound/Outbound Travel – Awards are made on a case-by-case basis. To qualify, your residence must be more than 50 miles from the laboratory.
• On-station Travel – Classified as travel during your appointment, on-station travel is designed to enhance your learning experience by promoting attendance at conferences, workshops, and other educational meetings. Awards are made on a case-by-case basis. Most short-term (e.g., summer) appointments do not qualify for on-station travel.

APPLICATION DEADLINES

Application is always open, but for best results, apply by February 15 for summer appointments, June 1 for fall, and October 1 for spring appointments.

Postgraduate Research Program (PGRP)

The NETL Postgraduate Research Program (PGRP), managed by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, is a high-intensity program designed to not only identify recent master’s and doctoral graduates of high promise, but to continue developing advanced research skills within those graduates. It allows the postgraduate researcher to systematically outline career goals and helps provide the means of achieving these goals. One way the program helps to achieve these goals is the critical interaction with NETL principal investigators, who become the postgraduate’s mentor. This interaction affords the postgraduate researcher a unique opportunity to define and structure his or her investigations, to establish a research paradigm, and to publish results--all critical skills needed to become an independent scientist or engineer.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT AREAS

LENGTH OF APPOINTMENT

Post-Master: Ten weeks to two year initial appointments renewable up to three years

Post-Doctoral: Ten weeks to two year initial appointments renewable up to five years

ELIGIBILITY

Graduates who received their master’s degree within the last three years, or doctorate within the last five years.

BENEFITS

• Stipend – All postgraduate appointments provide a monthly stipend based upon academic classification and experience.
• Insurance – Stipend supplement for single or family medical insurance is provided for most appointments (restrictions apply).
• Household Relocation – Awarded on a case-by-case basis, relocation supplements assist with moving your household goods from your current residence to the research center (restrictions may apply).
• On-station Travel – Classified as travel during your appointment, on-station travel is designed to enhance your learning experience by promoting attendance at conferences, workshops, and other educational meetings. Awarded on a case-by-case basis.

Faculty Research Program

The Faculty Research Program offers qualified academic faculty an opportunity to collaborate with NETL principal investigators on research that is mutually beneficial to NETL and the participant at state-of-the-art NETL facilities. While typical appointments are part-time, some appointments are offered during the summer and as a sabbatical. Prior to the appointment, the NETL principal investigator and participant will define the scope of research and schedule the appointment period. Appointment periods range from one month to more than one year. Funding varies and is awarded based upon the participants academic salary.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT AREAS

LENGTH OF APPOINTMENT

Faculty: Two weeks to one year initial appointments with continuous renewal

ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible, you must:

Be a full-time regular permanent faculty member at an accredited college/university with a research interest in NETL core R&D areas.

Additional requirements:

• Must provide a detailed statement of educational objectives and projected benefits to be realized as a result of the appointment.
• Part-time appointment candidates must submit a Part-Time Approval Form.
• Sabbatical appointment candidates must include a statement describing the financial arrangements with their academic institution , including fringe benefits paid by the institution (state as a percentage of salary and itemize).

BENEFITS

• Stipend – Stipends are awarded monthly and based upon your current faculty contract. Participants with sabbatical leave appointments are expected to have at least one-half of their salaries paid by their home institutions.
• Insurance – Insurance is a program requirement for the Faculty Research Program. Currently, no insurance stipend is available.
• Inbound/Outbound Travel – Awarded on a case-by-case basis. To qualify, your residence must be more than 50 miles from the Laboratory.
• On-station Travel – Classified as travel during your appointment, on-station travel is designed to enhance your collaboration by promoting attendance at conferences, workshops, and other educational meetings. Awarded on a case-by-case basis.
