NETL, with three primary locations in Albany, OR; Morgantown, WV; and Pittsburgh, PA, is the only national laboratory owned and operated by the United States Department of Energy. Its mission is to unleash the full potential of America’s hydrocarbon, geothermal, and critical mineral resources to provide affordable, reliable, and secure energy while meeting the Department of Energy’s Hydrocarbon and Geothermal Energy Office’s Strategic Goals:

Goal 1: Stabilize, optimize, and grow the American coal industry, restoring it as a cornerstone of our energy mix.

Goal 2: Ensure resilience of U.S. oil and natural gas production and infrastructure reliability.

Goal 3: Accelerate the discovery and development of gigawatt-scale geothermal energy and position geothermal as a competitive domestic source for reliable baseload electricity generation.

Goal 4: Ensure the security, stability, and strategic value of the Nation’s oil and gas exports and the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR).

Goal 5: Fill the SPR to its maximum capacity and maintain drawdown readiness.

Goal 6: Drive execution of the HGEO mission through the implementation of leading-edge, efficient, and fiscally responsible solutions across HGEO programs, processes, and systems

Goal 7: Uphold gold standard science and advance industry-aligned technologies to commercial scale.

Am I eligible?

Because of the educational nature of these programs, participants must fall into one of the following categories:

  • Students must be enrolled in an accredited U.S. pre-college, college or university pursuing a degree in a science, technology, engineering or math (STEM), and must maintain satisfactory progress in academic coursework.
  • Post-Masters graduates must have received their degree in an appropriate STEM discipline within three years of the appointment start date or must complete all requirements for such a degree prior to the desired start date.
  • Postdoctoral graduates must have received their degree in an appropriate STEM discipline within five years of the appointment start date or must complete all requirements for such a degree prior to the desired start date.
  • Faculty full-time regular permanent faculty member at an accredited college/university with a research interest in NETL core R&D areas.

What will I receive?

  • Stipend: Participants receive a monthly stipend to help defray living and other expenses during the appointment. Stipend rates are determined by NETL and are based on the participant’s educational level. Some mentors may also award relocation, a travel allowance, and/or a health insurance stipend
  • Travel: Depending on your project assignment, you may be eligible to receive reimbursement for travel and educational experiences which promote the educational goals of your appointment.
  • Relocation Allowance: A relocation reimbursement may be provided for expenses for participants who relocate more than fifty miles, one-way, to the assigned hosting site. You will be responsible for securing your own living space and determining your means of local transportation prior to arriving at the designated host site. Hosting facilities may provide assistance locating appropriate housing in the local area.
  • Health Insurance: A health insurance stipend is typically provided to cover medical, dental, and vision insurance.
