ORISE Beryllium Lab recertified by College of American Pathologists

On May 6, 2025, the ORISE Beryllium Testing Laboratory was the subject of a College of American Pathologists (CAP) inspection, a requirement for maintaining the lab’s CAP certification. During the inspection, the inspector examined the lab’s records and procedures for the preceding two years.
“Accreditation by the College of American Pathologists is considered the gold standard for medical laboratories. It indicates that a laboratory has met rigorous quality standards and is committed to providing accurate and reliable test results,” said ORISE Beryllium Testing Laboratory Manager Melissa Jones. “The purpose of the inspection was to discover, document, and correct any deficiencies identified. CAP also examines our staff’s qualifications, our lab equipment, facilities, safety procedures, as well as overall management of the laboratory.”
When the inspection was completed, no deficiencies were identified, and as a result the lab will continue to maintain its CAP certification. This makes the fifth consecutive inspection with no deficiencies and the 16th time the lab has become CAP-accredited.
The ORISE Beryllium Testing Laboratory is one of only three labs nationwide that performs the beryllium lymphocyte proliferation test (BeLPT), the primary diagnostic test to determine if workers have been exposed and sensitized to beryllium.
